PEOPLE

Gal Gadot tries to model sustainable behavior for her two daughters — and that includes skipping private flights

Gadot prioritizes sustainability over comfort when it comes to doing press for her movies.

The Wonder Woman 1984 actress, who recently became the new face of Smartwater, tries to stay environmentally conscious when she has to fly around the world promoting her hit movies. It’s part of how she tries to model a better and healthier life for her daughters Alma, 8, and Maya, 2.

I think that being a role model and actually doing the things and showing them how it should be done is a big thing, because then it’s being incorporated into their life,” she tells PEOPLE in the latest issue, on stands now. “So we make sure we recycle and make sure not to use plastic bags, not to travel with [private] jets when we’re doing press for movies, we make sure to give back as much as we can back to the world that we’re living in.

Gadot, 34, says it’s all part of her constant struggle to bring good habits into her home with husband Yaron Varsano, 45, while she balances work and motherhood.

I always try to find balance in my life and I think that being a mother and a working woman and traveling the world — it’s a struggle,” she says.

DEADLINE

Gal Gadot is to exec produce a short-form documentary series for Nat Geo.

The Wonder Woman star is behind #impact, a six-part digital series that follows the stories of young women around the world who overcome obstacles and do extraordinary things.

Produced by eOne, Pilot Wave Motion Pictures and RPC Films, the order was revealed by National Geographic Global Television Networks President Courteney Monroe during the network’s session at the Winter TCA press tour in Pasadena.

Directed by Freehold’s Vanessa Roth, Gadot exec produces alongside Jaron Varsano (My Dearest Fidel). For eOne, Tara Long serves as executive producer, Roth serves as executive producer and director. For RPC Films, Ryan Pallota serves as executive producer for the series and director for the pilot episode, Ana De Diego is executive producer. Eric Levin, Global Chief Content Officer, Spark is executive producer. For National Geographic, Ryan Harrington is executive producer; Alan Eyres is senior vice president, production and development; and Carolyn Bernstein is executive vice president, global scripted content and documentary films.

“I couldn’t think of a better partner than Gal Gadot for such an inspiring digital series about fearless young women who choose not to be defined by their circumstances, but rather create their own stories,” said Monroe. “These powerful stories of resilience and perseverance need to be told, and by releasing them first across our digital and social platforms, we’re bringing awareness of their achievements to a broader audience.”

“I’m deeply honored to bring awareness to these young women who are the true heroes among us,” added Gadot. “By partnering with National Geographic, I’m tapping into their massive and unparalleled global reach to ensure that #impact is followed by the largest audience possible. Together we’re making a true impact by sharing these incredible stories that will empower, lift and inspire women all over the world.”

YAHOO!

Gal Gadot sits on a pristine white couch in a Manhattan hotel suite, ready to greet an endless line of journalists. Despite the below-zero temperature outside, Gadot looks ready for summer in a sleeveless jumpsuit in a brilliant shade of blue.

Last week, Coca-Cola announced that the 34-year-old actress would serve as the new face of Smartwater. The move marks the end of an era, with Gadot replacing long-standing brand ambassador Jennifer Aniston after nearly 12 years.

It’s a big investment for the brand, but if there’s anyone who can deliver results, it’s Wonder Woman.

“Gal elevates the meaning of strength, beauty and balance on and off screen by bringing to life the smart, modern and innovative ethos of the brand,” Celina Li, VP, Water, Coca-Cola North America said in a press release.

Less than 24 hours after the announcement, I arrived in New York via Toronto for a Yahoo Canada exclusive, scoring the only international interview with Gadot. Waiting in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel, I bide my time by preparing for our meeting. Smooth jazz plays softly in the background as obedient staff trail guests spouting off a list of demands while carrying handbags that cost more than my mortgage.

I’m ushered by whispering staff down a long hallway in a hotel suite, not unlike that foreboding scene in “Goodfellas.”

“She’s right down there,” a woman says softly. “Yes, just keep going, she’s right down there.”

Instead of meeting an untimely fate à la Lorraine Bracco, I’m welcomed by Gadot and invited to sit down for what will be her last interview of the day.

At 5’10”, Gadot towers over the rest of the women in the room. The former beauty queen and Israeli soldier possesses a disarming beauty and confidence, with a warmth that somehow removes any feelings of intimidation one may have in her presence.

Gadot speaks slowly and articulately, deliberately choosing her words with her trademark euphonious accent. Aside from discussing her latest partnership, I learn very quickly that Gadot is not your typical Hollywood actress yearning for the spotlight—she’s a woman determined to alter the landscape of women in film.

HUFFPOST

Gal Gadot plays a superhero on the big screen, but behind the scenes the actor and mother of two has a host of rituals to get ready for that kind of role, as well a routine to take care of her mind and body on a daily basis.

This spring, fans can catch Gadot in “Wonder Woman 1984,” the sequel to the 2017 hit film that garnered box office and critical success. You’ll also start seeing a lot more of Gadot, even before the movie lands in theaters on June 5, as she officially became the new marketing face of Coca-Cola’s bottled water brand Smartwater this week.

HuffPost met Gadot to chat about her wellness routine, “Wonder Woman 1984” and the importance of female directors.

There are so many things that you could do for wellness. What’s your personal holistic approach to wellness?

Do you have enough time?

Yeah, exactly, I hear you!

I think that staying hydrated is a big thing. And especially for me when I travel all the time, this is something that always makes me feel energized and good. Now, as a philosophy of life that I have is, we live in such a modern, hectic, busy, pressured lives; and something that is really big for me is balance and finding the balance in everything that we do and finding ways to really charge ourselves both physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

When it comes to my body, I make sure I drink water. I make sure I work out. I make sure whatever I consume as much as I can is healthy and good for me. I try to meditate as much as I can and this is something that I try to teach my little girls how to do. And then, it’s just finding balance between being a mother who works … It’s like an endless struggle of trying, between the children’s schedules to your schedule, to your husband’s schedule to life. I really, really try to make time for family, make time for myself and really be mindful of that ― of balancing all the different aspects of life. And it is a constant thing ’cause it always changes … And also understanding that as long as we’re doing our best, that’s all we can do … and let go, when it’s time.

I’m curious, have you connected with Jennifer Aniston, who previously teamed with Smartwater?

My God, I wish. I love Jennifer Aniston. She’s one of my favorite actresses, and I adore her and admire her work. And I’m very happy to be partnering with Smartwater just like she did.

I get that. You mentioned your daughters earlier. What do you want to instill in them just beyond wellness?

I want them to be kind. I want them to be good to themselves. I want them to feel like they have limitless opportunities and that they should celebrate who they are. And also, I feel like we’re being sucked into a very, very demanding world; so again, find the balances. Do what’s good for you, and I hope they will.

I mean, that’s all you can do, right?

Yeah, exactly. Hope.

We’re talking about wellness and staying healthy. What do you do to prepare for a role like Wonder Woman?

It’s months of training and being on a special diet. And of course, at all times drinking lots of water, because especially when you’re training it’s a must for the muscles as well. We do a lot of gym strengthening work and a lot of stunt and choreography workouts. And I incorporated some Pilates into the last movie because I was like, “I need to do something that is good for me and not just compress the body,” so we do Pilates as well. And yeah, it’s very intensive. But I must say that after a couple of months of being very exhausted doing it every day, you really get into it and you’ll be amazed by what your body can do.

Because you do a lot of your own stunts, right?

Yeah, and I have two stunt girls who I love and are amazing and they should have their credits as well, but I do most of it. On this movie, we made sure that unlike many superhero films when you do it mostly green screen, we made sure to shoot as much as we can for real and on location. And it’s been very complicated and very lengthy and demanding, but it was so worth it.

“Wonder Woman” comes out later this year. If you had to tease what people can expect, what would you say without saying too much, of course?

Well, it’s a whole new journey of Wonder Woman on this film. And I hope and think that it’s going to have a profound effect on people because the movie is very universal. And other than the fact that it is packed with action and love story and new villains and the story is so great, I think there’s an under-layer that’s going to speak to each and every one of us.

“Wonder Woman” was directed by a woman, starring a woman. But here we are a couple of years later in the midst of awards season and no women were nominated in the director category at the Golden Globes, for instance. As owner of your own production company, what do you think about that?

I think everyone is talking about women empowerment and feminism; and obviously, granted by just the plain facts that you just mentioned, we’re not there yet. There’s still a long way to go. I think there are some fabulous, super talented female filmmakers that deserve to be recognized. And I can only hope, and do the work on my end as far as I can with my production companies and as a producer on “Wonder Woman” and other films and TV shows, that it’ll change. We’re just at the beginning of a trend.

This interview was edited and condensed for clarity.

With its product line set to grow this year, Smartwater is partnering with “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot and producing more types of ads than ever as part of a media investment that amounts to the largest marketing campaign in the Coca-Cola-owned brand’s history.

Handled by Anomaly New York, the brand’s exhaustive advertising efforts will largely be centered around its expanding offerings, with four new flavored water varieties set to roll out in 2020: Cucumber Lime, Strawberry Blackberry, Pineapple Kiwi and Watermelon Mint.

“This is the biggest year for Smartwater since the launch,” says Celina Li, VP of Water for Coca-Cola North America.

Founded in 1996, Smartwater long offered just one product: its classic, unflavored premium still water. But since 2015, the brand has debuted sparkling, flavored, and alkaline and antioxidant-infused variants in a trend that follows the beverage industry’s recent innovative streak.

“Consumers are drinking more water, but are also demanding more from their water,” Li says, noting a sales boom for “functional” beverages.

To promote the brand’s four new fruity, zero-calorie flavors, which are inspired by the “essence” of spa water, Smartwater will release a 30-second ad starring Gadot, who is now acting as “the face of the brand,” Li says.

In the spot, which was also cut into a 15-second version, Gadot’s only reprieve from a hectic street scene is to take a sip of Pineapple Kiwi Smartwater. “Take a moment … to be in the moment,” she says, slowing time as she drinks.

“We are really thrilled to partner with [Gadot]. She has taken a ‘Smartwater approach’ to her well-being, and she is a great partner to bring our brand to life,” Li added, saying Gadot will appear in various marketing materials throughout the year.
