Gal Gadot will star following her debut as the Princess Diana of Themyscira in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but new reports have suggested it will be a drastically different kind of film.

Dawn of Justice is set in the modern day, but according to Bleeding Cool, the first Wonder Woman movie will be set partly on Themyscira, also called as Paradise Island – the home of Wonder Woman and her Amazonian kin – and partly in the 1920s.

“I have been informed by those who have seen the greenlit treatment that the film will spends the first half on Paradise Island [Themyscira] with warring Amazon factions vying for control,” reads their report. “An arrival of a man on the island changes that status quo, as he asks the Amazons for help. Not necessarily Steve Trevor either…

“When Wonder Woman joins him on his return to the world of Man, we all discover that it is the 1920s. And the film will then show Diana exploring that world – a world where women have only just got the vote – from her unique perspective.”

The report also says that a second Wonder Woman movie would jump ahead a couple of decades to World War 2. Wonder Woman versus Nazis? I’m game.

The assumption was that Wonder Woman’s films would follow on from Batman v Superman in the present day. But a prequel series allows Warner Bros and DC to enrich the cohesive universe they are building, which will be highlighted with two Justice League movies in 2017 and 2019, and stay true to Wonder Woman’s origins in the comic universe.

Wonder Woman will be the first solo DC superhero adventure following Batman v Superman, and will be followed by outings for Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Cyborg and DC’s Captain Marvel, in Shazam!. Batman and Superman solo movies have also been confirmed, but do not have any release date.

Wonder Woman will be released on 23 June 2017.

The Israeli actress’ commitment to playing Wonder Woman proved to be a scheduling conflict

Gal Gadot’s commitment to Wonder Woman has forced her to pass on Timur Bekmambetov‘s remake of “Ben-Hur,” which is being mounted by Paramount and MGM, TheWrap has learned.

Neither studio immediately responded to a request for comment.

Jack Huston stars in “Ben-Hur” as the titular Jewish prince who is forced into slavery by his former friend Messala, who will be played by Toby Kebbell. Morgan Freeman co-stars in the film, which will employ today’s cutting-edge technology to reimagine the original film’s classic chariot race.

Two weeks ago, Gadot was reported to be in negotiations for the female lead of Esther, Ben-Hur’s true love. Those negotiations have ended and Gadot has passed on the project due to a scheduling conflict stemming from her commitment to WB’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and all that playing Wonder Woman entails, an individual close to the actress told TheWrap.

Keith Clarke and John Ridley wrote the script, which is based on Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ.”

Mark Burnett is producing with Sean Daniel and Joni Levin, while Roma Downey is executive producing with Clarke, Ridley and Jason Brown. Production will begin early next year in Europe in advance of a February 2016 release.

While Gadot was able to fit supporting roles in the indie movies “Triple Nine” and “Criminal” into her busy schedule, “Ben-Hur” is a much longer shoot that Gadot couldn’t accommodate. She’ll remain focused on Wonder Woman, who is getting her own solo movie in 2017 — the same year the beloved character will appear in Zack Snyder‘s “Justice League: Part One.”

Gadot is repped by ICM Partners, Untitled Entertainment, Israel’s ADD Agency and Felker Toczek.

/ October 27th, 2014   Wonder Woman

For months now, there has been talk how Zack Snyder will explain the origins of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. How would fans accept her supernatural powers, without an origin story? Would her powers be tied into those of Superman?

Now, after months and months, we have an answer:

Wonder Woman is NOT a Kryptonian

Much of the speculation about Wonder Woman’s origins focused on one particular Easter Egg in Man of Steel. As Superman entered the fortress of Solitude for the first time and found the corpses of his fellow Kryptonians in their cryogenic pods, there was one open pod.

The theory which followed from this, which has its origins in the Man of Steel prequel comic, was that Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) had gotten free thousands of years before Superman’s arrival on earth, and set up a colony of powerful women on the island of Themyscira. These women became known to the Greeks as the Amazons, and Gal Gadot’s character was to be descended from Supergirl, making her a distant cousin of Superman.

Now, though, a producer of Batman vs Superman has come and spoken out about Wonder Woman’s backstory. Charles Roven said:

Well Wonder Woman’s in it, we know that. She has powers, she’s a goddess. She’s half… she’s a demigod. Her father was Zeus.

In the New 52 comics, Wonder Woman is the offspring of Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons & Zeus, king of the Gods. A result of this union, however, is to endanger the young Diana Prince (Wonder Woman), as Zeus’ wife Hera wants to track down and kill the young Amazon girl.

This origin will introduce a whole host of other characters, too, such as Circe and Ares, which we will presumably see in the Wonder Woman standalone movie.

The reason why Zack Snyder has opted for this origin for Wonder Woman is clear. Although it might have been convenient at first to tie the origins of the two characters with supernatural powers in Batman vs Superman together, it does not make sense when you consider that we are expecting to see Dawn of Justice introduce, at least, Cyborg, Aquaman, Green Lantern & The Flash, if not others, too.

However, confirmation of this origin for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman does raise one interesting possibility. Themyscira, the home of the Amazons, could play a big part in the story of one potential Justice League villain: Doomsday!

Doomsday Coming to Batman vs Superman!?

The Amazons of Themyscira guard over a gateway to another realm of dark and deadly creatures known as Doom’s Doorway. We already know that Gal Gadot & co have travelled to Morocco to film scenes set in Themyscira, and that Doomsday is speculated to be the villain powerful enough to unite the Justice League.

Wonder Woman may be just now getting her first standalone movie, but the Amazonian princess has been around for a long time. And original WW Lynda Carter, who played the ultimate girl power icon in the seventies TV show, has some valuable advice for newcomer Gal Gadot.

Israeli actress Gal is playing Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s hero team-up Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is currently shooting in Detroit. But last week it was also announced that the actress has scored her very own spin off movie with Warner Bros.

The costume may have changed a bit, but Lynda reckons Gal’s new take on the superhero should borrow from her original. Speaking to Vulture at the 2014 Golden Heart Awards, the actress says of her most famous role:

“Wonder Woman is about a lot more than just superhero stuff. She’s complicated. Ultimately, she’s about truth, and it’s all heart with her. She’s a strong female force.”

As for why it’s taken so long for the heroine to get her own film, Lynda muses: “I think femalesbaffle men, and so, that’s made it difficult to get a Wonder Woman movie made. She’s strong, but she’s so much more — not everybody gets that … Most important, I want her to have a heart and a strong sense of humor.” With Snyder taking a darker approach to Batman V Superman, and judging by Gal’s costume, we’re not sure Lynda’s gonna get many laughs.

And don’t even ask if that golden lasso has a use inside the bedroom, Lynda firmly told the site: “I don’t see her into bondage.” And just like that, a million teenage boys’ hearts have been shattered.

/ October 27th, 2014   Ben Hur

The Hollywood Reporter says that negotiations are in the early stages, but if a deal is reached, Gadot will take on the role of Esther, a slave and love interest of Ben-Hur. Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) is already signed on to play the film’s titular character, while Toby Kebbell will portray Ben-Hur’s friend-turned-betrayer, Messala. Morgan Freeman is also set to appear as Ben-Hur’s mentor who trains him to become a champion chariot-racer.
